Publication Adapting Practices from Qualitative Research to Tell a Compelling Story: A Practical Framework for Conducting a Literature Review(2021-05-06) Kalpokas Matulaityte, Neringa; Radivojevic, Ivana; https://ror.org/02jjdwm75Despite the literature review being a common task for researchers, the actual process of conducting a quality literature review can easily be taken for granted. In effort to help qualitative researchers, this paper presents a practical framework for conducting a literature review that stems from qualitative research practices. As a literature review is essentially an analysis of rich textual information, qualitative research concepts, and skills can be creatively applied to the process of conducting a literature review. The present paper aims to share the fruits of qualitative analysis with researchers from all disciplines so that they may make sense of this rich information and tell a coherent and compelling story regarding their own analysis. In particular, this paper outlines foundational similarities between qualitative research and literature reviews and then proceeds to provide adaptable guidelines for connecting qualitative research skills to carrying out a rigorous literature review. We hope to incite curiosity and reflection on how qualitative research skills can be valuable beyond just analyzing qualitative data.Publication Carry the past into the future: the effects of CEO temporal focus on succession planning in family firms(Springer, 2022-06) Lu, Feifei; Kwan, Ho Kwong; Ma, Bin; National Natural Science Foundation of China; https://ror.org/02jjdwm75In this study,the relationship between CEO temporal focus and family business succession planning is examined and the moderating effects of family interactions and environmental uncertainty are assessed. Based on data from 198 CEOs of family businesses and additional data from 15 semi-structured interviews in China,we find that CEO temporal focus (i.e.,past,present,or future focus) is positively associated with succession planning. In addition,family interactions strengthen the relationship between CEO past focus and succession planning and weaken the relationship between CEO future focus and succession planning. Moreover,in uncertain environments,past-focused CEOs are more likely to plan for succession than present-focused CEOs. A review of the pay dispersion literature indicates a controversy around this vital question and suggests that numerous contingency factors moderate the effects of pay dispersion. In an empirical study of four Finnish companies consisting of 141 work units,we examine contingencies in attitudinal reactions to job-based pay dispersion among blue-collar workers. Based on archival pay data matched with employee survey responses (n = 536),we find that perceptions of pay basis legitimacy,task interdependence,and an individual's pay standing within the work unit explain the strength and direction of the relation between job-based pay dispersion and employee attitudes (i.e.,work engagement and organizational commitment). Our findings have implications for the design of pay systems and contribute to a better appreciation of the complexities underlying employee attitudinal responses to pay dispersion. © 2023 The Authors. Frente a la atribución al progreso comunicativo de un imperativo políticamente democratizador, Bauman, en su póstuma Retrotopía, describe la red como flujo individualista de autorreproducción expansiva que forma un «vecindario indefinido global» de «servidumbre voluntaria». Método. Análisis fenomenológico del diagnóstico de Bauman mediante revisión de sus obras. Adoptada la perspectiva del «vecindario indefinido», examinar si las tendencias de la red pueden interpretarse como consumismo masivo igualitario o como imperativamente democratizadoras. Resultados. La proposición de que la red global de comunicación interindividual generaliza una «servidumbre voluntaria» merece ser planteada en proyectos de investigación empírica como hipótesis contrastable. Discusión. La red ecuménica de prosumidores que constituye el «vecindario indefinido» en la globalización líquida necesita ser visible en todos los ámbitos sociales y en el mercado. Conclusiones. This paper presents a foundational model that facilitates a comprehensive yet manageable approach to qualitative data analysis, and it can be applied within an array of qualitative methodologies. Based on an exhaustive review of expert qualitative methodologists, along with our own experience of teaching qualitative research, this model synthesises commonly-used analytic strategies and methods that are likewise applicable to novice qualitative researchers. This foundational model consists of four iterative cycles: The Inspection Cycle, Coding Cycle, Categorisation Cycle, and Modelling Cycle, and memo-writing is inherent to the entire analysis process. Individual differences in daily rhythms (chronotypes) can affect individual sleep-wake cycles,activity patterns and behavioral choices. Diurnal preference,the tendency towards morningness or eveningness among individuals,has been associated with interpersonal variation in circadian clock-related output measures,including body temperature,melatonin levels and clock gene mRNA in blood,oral mucosa,and dermal fibroblast cell cultures. Methods: Here we report gene expression data from two principal clock genes sampled from hair follicle cells,a peripheral circadian clock. Hair follicle cells from fourteen individuals of extreme morning or evening chronotype were sampled at three time points. RNA was extracted and quantitative PCR assays were used to measure mRNA expression patterns of two clock genes,Per3 and Nr1d2. Results: We found significant differences in clock gene expression over time between chronotype groups,independent of gender or age of participants. Extreme evening chronotypes have a delay in phase of circadian clock gene oscillation relative to extreme morning types. Variation in the molecular clockwork of chronotype groups represents nearly three-hour phase differences (Per3: 2.61 hours; Nr1d2: 3.08 hours,both: 2.86) in circadian oscillations of these clock genes. Conclusions: The measurement of gene expression from hair follicles at three time points allows for a direct,efficient method of estimating phase shifts of a peripheral circadian clock in real-life conditions. Ortega y Gasset pronosticó importantísimos fenómenos, cuya importancia puede actualmente comprobarse, como la aceleración de la técnica, la pérdida de la presencia europea en el mando del mundo, el traspaso a las redes sociales de la rebelión de las masas y la reducción planetaria por el avance de las comunicaciones. El cumplimiento de estas previsiones y la pulcritud de la edición han renovado el interés por estudiar su obra. Un interés que se muestra en la reciente publicación de trabajos que subrayan la originalidad previsora de la filosofía orteguiana. Coinciden en destacar que el meollo que da sentido a su conjunto se encuentra en su filosofía de la técnica. Lo que se plantea es que el discurso de Recursos Humanos puede ser conceptualizado como un dispositivo de poder para que las personas se adapten y se transformen según las necesidades de la empresa. Se utiliza una metodología cualitativa, que se apoya en el análisis de textos escritos, utilizando procesos de categorización, apoyados en el software NVIVO 11. Los resultados muestran el modo en que el discurso crea formas de hacer, ser y modelos de relaciones frágiles, desiguales y en competencia, que hacen imposible el compromiso de las personas con la empresa.Publication Hiring Temps but Losing Perms? It argues that inflows of temporary workers erode the working conditions of permanent employees, prompting their voluntary departure. Using a unique panel dataset of individual-level monthly payroll data over an eight-year period in a sample of Spanish companies, a positive association between temporary worker inflows and the voluntary turnover of permanent workers is found. The results are robust to diverse specifications and are strongest for firms in non-manufacturing sectors and for firms that hire proportionally more low-skilled workers, contexts where the hiring of temporary workers may be more disruptive for permanent employees. Since the hiring of temporary workers is unlikely to threaten the employment of permanent employees in the dual labour market of Spain, the results indicate serious disruption costs associated with temporary hiring in organisationsPublication “I wish I knew what I know now”: Exploring Psychology Undergraduate Students’ Experiences When Learning About Qualitative Research and CAQDAS(2020-07-08) Kalpokas Matulaityte, Neringa; Radivojevic, Ivana; https://ror.org/02jjdwm75Learning to conduct qualitative research and use computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) can be challenging, which is why it may be more effective to introduce the craft of qualitative research to undergraduate students who have the time and space to learn, even make mistakes, and ultimately build a better understanding for their future studies and careers. There are relatively few published studies sharing insights on teaching qualitative research and CAQDAS to undergraduate students. This descriptive qualitative case study explores students’ experiences in a qualitative research course for undergraduate psychology students, with the aim of discerning how feasible learning both qualitative research and CAQDAS was for these students as well as how they perceived learning about these contents. Data was collected from an online open-ended survey from two consecutive generations of students that completed the course. Students found the course to be a challenging but worthwhile experience: new knowledge and skills were gained that they felt would be useful for their professional and even personal lives. These students recognized that the qualitative research course was an important complement to their predominantly quantitative curriculum. By teaching undergraduate students about qualitative research and CAQDAS, professors can teach their students in a lower-stakes environment and provide them with valuable hands-on experience so that students may later make better-informed decisions about which research approach to use in their own projects and continued studies or work.Publication Improving attitudes towards minority groups by thinking about the thoughts and meta-cognitions of their members(John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2022-12-12) Martínez, Rocío; Briñol, Pablo; Petty, Richard; Santos, David; https://ror.org/02jjdwm75Research on persuasion has shown that for attitudes to change people need to take into consideration not only the thoughts message recipients generate in response to proposals but also how people think about their own thoughts (metacognition). In the present research,we introduce a new perspective for improving outgroup attitudes focused on the distinction between cognition and metacognition but this time applied to the perceptions of others’ minds. Specifically,we examined to what extent thinking about the mental processes of outgroup members influences attitudes towards those outgroups. We compared the impact of thinking about how others think (perceived primary cognition) with how others think about their own thoughts (perceived secondary cognition or metacognition). In the primary cognition treatment,participants answered questions about the thinking processes of outgroup members. In the secondary cognition treatment,participants answered questions that required them to consider how outgroup members think about their own thoughts (i.e.,metacognition). Compared to controls,these treatments were capable of improving attitudes of Spanish citizens towards Syrian refugees,South American immigrants,and Roma people. A third study used a minimal group paradigm in which a fictitious outgroup was described as having primary (vs. secondary) cognition. A final study also tested the implications of assuming that groups have one type of cognition or another. The effects of the two treatments varied depending on the type of outgroup. © 2022 The Authors. Under the pretext of mediating between Haitians and Dominicans,the main powers vied to increase their influence over the Santo Domingo executive,initially by establishing diplomatic relations. Although the first initiatives of the Dominican government to reach an agreement with Spain were rejected by the Madrid cabinet,it eventually decided to establish relations with that of Santo Domingo in order to act on the ground and hinder U.S. expansionism in the Dominican Republic,since the Spanish authorities in Cuba and Puerto Rico considered it a threat to the preservation of these islands. Nevertheless, figures still show a large quantitative difference on boards of directors and in the top levels of company management. Both public and private sectors have launched a series of initiatives designed to eliminate this imbalance. After carrying out studies in recent years, however, we believe that these initiatives are nearly all centred on the external barriers that hinder women’s promotion. Meanwhile there are major hurdles at an internal level that make women’s advancement difficult, and which only a change in culture and perspective can resolve it. Here,we test whether these behavioral effects are associated with endogenous biological rhythms. We asked participants to complete two well-established decision-making tasks in the morning or evening: the matrix task (an ethical decision task) and the balloon analog risk task (BART; a risk-taking task),and we measured their chronotype in two ways. First,participants completed a self-report measure,the Horne-Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). Second,we measured the expression of two circadian clock-regulated genes - Per3 and Nr1d2 - from peripheral clock cells in participants' hair follicle samples. Using a cosinor model,we estimated the phase of the peripheral clock and assigned RNA chronotypes to participants with advanced (larks) or delayed (owls) phases. The behavioral data were analyzed independently for self-reported (MEQ) and RNA-based chronotypes. We find that significant chronotype and/or time-of-day effects between larks and owls in decision-making tasks occur only in RNA-based chronotypes. Our results provide evidence that time-of-day effects on decision-making can be explained by phase differences in oscillating clock genes and suggest that variation in the molecular clockwork may influence inter-individual differences in decision-making behavior.Publication MOOCs at Work: What Induces Employer Support for Them?(Taylor & Francis, 2019-05-21) Hamori, Monika; https://ror.org/02jjdwm75Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are the learning technology with the fastest adoption rates in recent years, and they have the potential to transform corporate development practices. There is, however, only fragmented evidence on how employers use MOOCs. This paper relies on human capital theory to formulate hypotheses about the antecedents of employer support for MOOCs. It tests the hypotheses using data from a survey of MOOC learners and secondary data on the courses and on learners’ countries. The results confirm that small employers that lack the scale to invest in in-company formal training are more likely to provide support for MOOCs than their larger counterparts, and that some organizations grant learners time off from work for MOOCs with not only core, but also non-core but still job-relevant content. Overall, however, employers fail to capitalize on low-cost MOOCs to compensate for a lack of formal training. On the contrary, what little MOOC support they offer goes to executives and full-time, rather than part-time employees.Publication My History or Our History? In this paper,we theorize that inclusive (exclusive) historical representations can increase (decrease) marginalized group members' perceived centrality to the nation,entitlement to speak on its behalf,and likelihood of becoming leaders. In an online experiment in India (),we randomly assign participants exercises sourced from official state textbooks containing either an exclusive,inclusive,or a neutral representation of history. We subsequently assess the supply of and demand for Muslim leadership using both an original,incentivized game and additional survey and behavioral measures. We find that inclusive historical narratives increase Muslim participants' perceived centrality and entitlement,desire to lead,and demand for real-world Muslim leaders. Battles over history can carry consequences for the leadership ambitions of marginalized individuals,for themselves and their communities. © The Author(s),2023. La revisión utiliza relevantes citas de McLuhan a Ortega Gasset para el cotejo que nunca han sido comentadas. El modelo de Cloutier es una especificación de aldea global. Dejando aparte cuestiones de estilo y construcción, la principal discrepancia es la acotación temática del objeto estudiado. Cotejada la literatura que contrapone estos modelos con los resultados obtenidos precisamos sus diferencias doctrinales. La aldea global se centra en la prolongación de los sentidos por los medios de la técnica. Drawing on motivation and capability-based approaches,we proposed and examined how employees’ perception of their overqualification would influence job crafting by increasing workplace anxiety. Furthermore,we employ emotion regulation literature to predict that reappraisal will mitigate the negative effects of workplace anxiety on job crafting. Using a sample of 1,112 workers from China,our findings showed that (1) perceived overqualification was positively associated with job crafting; (2) perceived overqualification was positively associated with workplace anxiety,which in turn reduced job crafting; and (3) reappraisal emotion regulation weakened the detrimental effect of workplace anxiety on job crafting. Based on these findings,we discussed theoretical and practical implications. © The Author(s) 2022.
